What pCloud Actually Is

It’s not trying to be Google Workspace. There’s no office suite, no email, no calendar. pCloud does one thing: stores your files in the cloud, syncs them across devices, and lets you share them. That focus shows in the quality of the core experience.
The Virtual Drive: pCloud’s Killer Feature
This is what separates pCloud from Dropbox and most competitors.
Dropbox, Google Drive, and OneDrive download files to your local disk and keep them synced. A 500GB cloud storage account uses 500GB of your local disk. With a 256GB laptop, that’s a problem.
pCloud Drive creates a virtual drive (like a USB stick) that shows all your cloud files without downloading them. Files stream on demand. A 2TB pCloud account uses only megabytes of local space until you actually open a file.
In practice: I have 800GB in pCloud. My laptop’s pCloud folder shows 0.3GB used locally. When I open a file, it downloads instantly. When I close it, changes sync back. It feels like a local drive but costs zero disk space.
You can mark specific folders for offline access (like Dropbox’s Smart Sync), but the default is cloud-only. This makes pCloud usable on devices with small SSDs.

Sharing works well for sending files and collaborating on folders. The upload link feature is underrated: give someone a link, and they can upload files directly to your pCloud without needing an account.
What’s missing: No real-time document editing. No Google Docs or Office Online equivalent. If you need to collaboratively edit spreadsheets or documents, pCloud isn’t the answer. Use it for storage and sharing, not live collaboration.
Security: The Honest Assessment

Switzerland provides strong privacy protection. pCloud is not subject to the US CLOUD Act, FISA Section 702, or EU data retention directives. Data stored in the Luxembourg datacenter falls under EU GDPR with Swiss privacy law as an additional layer.

My Recommendation
pCloud is the best-value European cloud storage. The virtual drive solves a real problem (cloud storage without local disk cost), the Swiss jurisdiction provides genuine privacy advantages, and the lifetime plan eliminates recurring bills.
It’s not the most private option. Without the Crypto add-on, your files are encrypted but not zero-knowledge. For maximum privacy, Proton Drive is better. For maximum features, Nextcloud is better. For the best balance of privacy, features, and value, pCloud wins.
